Who is responsible
Places of Earth

We have not appointed a data protection officer because the legal conditions for one are not met. More about the operator is in the legal notice.
What we collect
Places of Earth has no user accounts and does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Fonts and scripts are served by us, without third-party services. Our servers keep standard technical logs (IP address, time, requested page, browser type) for security and troubleshooting and delete them after 14 days at the latest. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a secure, working service (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
On your device
If you switch between °C and °F, your choice is stored in your browser's local storage so the site remembers it. It never leaves your device.
Third-party content
To show photographs, maps and satellite imagery, your browser loads images and map tiles directly from Wikimedia, OpenFreeMap, EOX and Amazon Web Services. These providers receive your IP address and browser details as part of that request, under their own privacy policies. The Wikimedia Foundation and Amazon Web Services are based in the United States, so this can mean a transfer to a third country. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in showing photographs and maps (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)). Weather forecasts are fetched by our server itself; your IP address is not passed on.
Contact and removal requests
When you use the contact form we store the reason, the page address and the details you write, only to act on the request (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b) and (f)), and delete them once it is dealt with, after twelve months at the latest. You can ask us to delete them sooner at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you can ask for access to, correction or deletion of personal data we hold about you, restrict or object to its processing, and receive it in a portable format; in the EU and UK you can also complain to a data protection authority. Use the contact form and choose “Privacy request”.
Changes
If we change this notice we will update the date above. Material changes, such as introducing advertising, will be announced on this page first.
